What’s the best cleaner for tile flooring?

One of the many benefits of ceramic and porcelain tile flooring is easy cleanability. Dirt and grime sit at the top in plain view, so it's easy to see and wipe away.

Think also about grout. It's absorbent and stains and darkens easily. If you clean it regularly, it becomes easy to maintain without scrubbing.

What to look for in tile floor cleaners

You want something strong enough to lift away stains and grime without leaving any residue.

The cleaner shouldn't be too acidic or contain harsh, toxic chemicals. These can damage and discolor the grout.

Be sure your cleaner is labeled "safe for ceramic tiles." Consult experts at the tile store if you have questions; suggestions can be found on the manufacturer's website.

The best cleaner comes from your kitchen

Vinegar (white or apple cider) is acidic enough to break down dirt, grime, and grease. It's not so acidic, however, to cause harm to ceramic. White vinegar also sanitizes.

Use ½ cup vinegar with a gallon of hot water. Add a drop of dish detergent.

Start with thorough sweeping. Go into corners and, if possible, under cabinets and appliances–anywhere dirt and sand hide.

Using a mop with a microfiber head or cloth is preferable when cleaning your tile flooring. Sponges can move the dirt around. Change the water often.

Once you mop with the cleaner, go over the floor again. Use only hot water this time.

Grout can be cleaned with a vinegar/baking soda paste. There are also many excellent grout cleaners on the market.
